Earth Day Clean Up and Mystery Reader

On Monday, April 27 our school worked together to learn about the Earth and the environment. We had an amazing time with our reading buddies in our lunch groups. In our groups we followed clues on a scavenger hunt and then completed environmentally friendly activities at each station. Here are some pictures:

The same morning we had another Mystery Reader join us! Say hello to Nuzhat's mom! We listened to her read one of Nuzhat's favourite stories. Thank you so much for coming in, we really enjoyed the book.

Happy Earth Day!

Every April 22 is Earth Day. It is celebrated around the world!

The last couple of weeks has been super busy with Earth Day related lessons and activities. We have been learning about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. We have also talked about what goes in the garbage, the recycling bin and the green bin. Help your child by giving them opportunities to throw out trash at home!

We have been watching our Fairy Gardens and plant predictions grow.

Look at the shoots and leaves that have been growing! We also noticed that our seed in the dark cardboard box did not grow. Our seed in paper towel and leaves also did not grow.

As a school, each class has painted a planter box and will be planting together. Our class was divided into 4 groups, one for each side of our planter.

Our word of the week last week and this week is: here.

Here is my book.
I would like Christopher to come over here, please.

Please continue to work on letter SOUNDS.
As a reminder you can go to the following youtube video to help your child solidify their letter sounds in a fun way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Djz82FBYiug&list=PLE943AE28798B8B3C

Also great is when you are reading ANYWHERE or ANYTHING...ask them what sound the word starts with. Help them sound out what letters they can hear in the word. For example, if you are eating a banana you could say the word out loud and emphasize each syllable. BA-NA-NA has 3 syllables. What letter sounds do you hear? Say it slowly. This will help your child with writing and reading!

As always, continue to read and feel free to ask questions any time!

Forsythe Farms

Forms for the trip were distributed on Friday, April 10 to each student. Please make sure the green form and money are submitted to the teacher by Wednesday, April 29.

Please note, volunteers who submitted a request have been sent home a note attached to the trip form. We are so happy that so many parents and guardians want to come on the trip. Unfortunately we are only able to take a handful of volunteers with us. We did our best to accommodate parents and volunteers who have not come on a trip with us previously.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication!

We are looking forward to the trip. If there are any questions please feel free to ask our team!

Week of April 7

Word of the Week

Scientists in the School

This week we had Scientists in the School where our students explored magnets. We sorted magnets, played magnetic games, explored things that could be magnetic and couldn't be magnetic, tested different materials and so much more.

Here are some pictures of our fun morning!

Fairy Garden Growth

Look at how much our gardens have grown! It seems like different things are starting to grow now, not just the grass! Wow. We can't wait until it has all grown.

What does a seed need to grow?

We are starting to see some growth in some of our friends' containers. There are some that still are not growing. We are curious to see if they will!

Still no growth

A small shoot is coming up.

Inquiry updates!

We have growth in our Fairy Gardens!! Each garden has seen new growth this week and we are continuing to take care of them and monitor each day. We are so excited!

What does a seed need to grow?

Our students decided to find out what they needed to grow a seed. Here are some experimental pictures! We decided we wanted the following items: a box, a flashlight, leaves, marbles, soil, sun and water.

And here is what we created:

Planting our seeds.

Will a seed grow in a dark box with a flashlight?
