June!

Dear parents,

The FDK team has sent out a June newsletter. Here are some things we talked about in the newsletter:

Author’s Day
Author’s Day is on June 12. Parents are welcome to attend. Each child will be reading something they wrote. It will begin at 1:00 pm, with an open house afterwards from 2:10 pm until 3:00 pm.

Book Bag Program
Book Bag program is finished for the year. Please return any books that you may have at home as soon as possible.

Year-End Party

To thank our parents for their continued support throughout the year, we will be having a Year-End Party! It will happen on Tuesday, June 23 beginning at 1:00 pm. All parents please join us if you can!

There will be water play, snacks, bingo, games and prizes.

Word of the Week
Last week's word was:
they. They are my friends.

This week's word is:
then. First I went to the store. Then I went to the park.

This week your child will get a list of the words we have done this year. Please practice with them over the summer! You can play Go Fish (make 2 sets of the words and play!), choose 2 words to work on a week and play tic tac toe (ie. one person gets to be the word the the other person gets to be the word are. The first person to get 3 in a row for their word wins. Change the word every week!), draw a picture and write a sentence with the word, scramble letters and make the word. Every time you see the word when you are reading, grocery shopping or taking a walk point it out.

More Animals! : The Circle of Life
Last week was also a special week. We have been learning about animals from the farm but we also got to see baby chicks hatch AND butterflies being set free.

Baby chicks from Ms. Tobias' class. They use their egg tooth to help them get out. They are fluffy now because they are dry.

This is the case that Mr. Leung's class had their caterpillars in. At the top where the paper towel is you can see all the chrysalis that are hanging, getting ready to become butterflies.

Mystery Reader
Last week we also had a mystery reader visit us. Knock Knock.....it was Aker's mom, Ms. Lubin! She read a great book about keeping our hands to ourselves and using our words. We had a lot of fun listening to her read.

Community Helpers in the School
Last week we also got to talk to a community helper in our school: Ms. Connie! She is our caretaker at the school and she does A LOT for us. She fixes things in our class (like our curtain), makes sure we have enough toilet paper, cleans our floors, sets up the lunch room, cuts the grass and so much more. We found out how amazing the caretaker is at our school!

Author's Day
Our kiddos have been super busy writing their Author's Day books. Senior Kindergarteners and a few Junior Kindergarteners wrote a version of The Book that Jack Wrote. This is a book we have read in class a few times. We even wrote one as a class on the SmartBoard!

We talked about different characters we could use and different actions they could use.

Junior Kindergarteners wrote a short story or sentence for a picture they drew. It could be about whatever they wanted it to be. Most used a character we brainstormed on the carpet together. Some made their own!

Don't forget to join us this Friday June 12 for Author's Day and Open House afterwards.

Building Building Building
Here in Room 104 we love to build. We have the most imaginative students out there. We are getting so good at building things now and using our imagination.

Look at some of the things we build.
