Clementine Day 17

Even though we decided to check on Day 30...one of the friends in our class discovered a big change!

On day 17, this is what we found. We passed it around, looked at it and smelled a strong stinky smell.

Our friends noticed a lot of grey, white and green on it. It was decided that "we can't eat it because it has been a long time." That means, when our food starts to look like that we shouldn't eat it!

Measurement

In the last 2 weeks we have been exploring MEASUREMENT!

This week we explored scales. Our class read the book Balancing Act to get an idea of what a see-saw or teeter totter looked like. We then explored how to make our own. We had some trials and mistrials and then we looked at it as a class. What worked? What didn't? How do we get the tray to balance? What would happen if I put a bear counter on one side? How do I get it to balance again?

Each group was given: a tube, sticky tack, and a tray of some sort.

We then explored with real balances. Let's see what we find next week!

The Clementine Experiment

Inquiry Update:

We found seeds inside our mystery object after we figured out how to break it open. We began to make some comparisons between the seeds inside this squash to the inside of the pumpkin we opened in October.
These seeds are dry. The pumpkin in October was slippery, cold, slimy and wet.

What will happen to this clementine if we leave it for 10 days? Our class is observing. Here is what we noticed:
It is squishy.
It is soft.
It looks like a bouncy ball.
It looks like an orange.
It's orange.

Here are our predictions:
It will get brown and it will be bigger.
It is gonna be old.
It's going to be red.
It's gonna be like a pumpkin.

Day 1

Day 4
On Day 4 we made some more predictions and observations:
It is a little brown.
I see brown dots.
There's 2 colours.
There is no green dot (the stem is gone).
It is more squishy.

ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE TRIP - February 10
We will get a chance to explore the amazing Science Centre and participate in a Science Investigators workshop. On the day of the trip, we are asking parents to pack a lunch and snacks that can be disposed of. Students will be walking with their bags while enjoying the exhibit. We want to make sure all their belongings are safe and bags are light to carry.

Report cards will be sent home on February 10 to Junior Kindergarteners only. Interviews are optional but may be requested by the teacher.

Welcome Back!

It's January!

Happy New Year to everyone and welcome to 2015.

We are back at school and it is very cold. The weather is always changing so please come prepared!

Our class has been busy at work the first few days. We are working on sight words that we learned before the holidays and adding new ones too!

Here are the words we know:
can   I can skip.
the    The dog is yellow.
my    I put my book on the shelf.
like   I like to play with Joshua.
and   I played with Noor and Mohamed.
me    Please give it to me.
you   Do you like apples?
is       The snow is falling.
see    I see a bird.
yes    Yes, I like apples.
no      There are no more apples.
it        It is very cold.

At home, you can practice in many ways:
-write the words on paper and cut them out. Put them all down and call out a word to see how fast your child can find it
-make 2 of each word. Put all the words face down on the table. Take turns flipping over 2 cards at a time to find a matching word. You win the matching cards if you can say the word.
-make 2 of each word and play Go Fish! Give each player 4 cards. Put the rest of the cards face down (this is called the pile). Look at your cards to see if you have any matches and take them out. Take turns and ask if your partner has a word in your hand. IE "Do you have my?". If your partner does not have the word, you take a card from the pile. Keep going until all the cards are finished.
-draw a picture and use the words to make a sentence

New Inquiry: What is making the sound inside this object?

A friend in our class found this in the classroom. Some of us think it's a pumpkin. When we shook it, it made a funny sound. What could be inside?

We asked some questions and made some predictions and observations about it:
Is there water in there?
Is it a bubble inside?
Does it have seeds?
Is it juice?
It might grow into a pumpkin.
Where did it come from?
Maybe a squirrel eats the stuff inside.

FEE FI FOE FUM! There's lots of measuring to be done!
We have started MEASUREMENT! Our students have been comparing things in our class. What is longer and what is shorter?

Organizing from shortest to longest.

Sorting what is longer and shorter.

Helping our friends organize from shortest to tallest.
Whoa! It has been a busy first week. Please remember to READ READ READ at home!
